The chess club aims to instill a love for the game of chess in our students. Also known as 'The Game of Kings,' chess helps students problem solve, strategize, and learn how to deal with success and defeat in healthy ways. It also provides them with the opportunity to cultivate a lifelong healthy hobby.

In middle school chess, all skill levels are welcome. Each Monday from 3:30-4:30pm we will learn or practice a new skill or strategy on ChessKid.com and then play a live game with other students in the club. 

We have two tournaments during the year on Saturday, November 11^th at Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy and Saturday, April 20^th at Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy. By joining the chess club, students are committing to attend the tournament if they are selected. We can only take 10 students to the tournament, so if we have more than 10 students in the club, we will have a club tournament to determine which players will attend the district tournaments. 

There will also be a few additional tournament opportunities throughout the year if we have enough interest from the team. When these tournaments are announced, I’ll send information via Remind. The Remind code for Chess Club is whilamsc.

Our cheerleaders will not be competing; this club is to expose girls to cheer and have fun.  We will meet on Mondays after school starting on Sept. 25^th.  The club is currently closed so we are not accepting any more students. 

• Participation in organized, district-wide video game competitions, including popular titles suitable for their age group, such as Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Mario Kart, Rocket League, and Fortnite.
• Team-building exercises that emphasize collaboration and communication.
• Developing strategic thinking and decision-making skills through gameplay.

• Building friendships with peers who share a passion for gaming.

We believe that our Esports Club offers a unique and exciting way for your child to engage with technology and peers in a positive and educational manner. It's a fantastic opportunity for them to develop teamwork, critical thinking, and digital literacy skills.

Esports, also known as eSports, e-Sports, egames, or electronic sports is an organized competitive video gaming. It primarily involves teams/schools competing against each other in tournaments for a District prize. Functionally, it’s the same as traditional sports. Top-level athletes are constantly vying for the top spots in their sport, or game, of choice.

In the U.S., over 600 colleges and universities have added varsity esports teams and/or scholarships for esports, and this year PlayVS announced a partnership to bring esports to 19,500 high schools. The numbers clearly show, eSports is here to stay.

Folklorico club will consist of teaching the children cultural dances from different cities and states from Mexico. 

This type of dance reflects the traditions and cultures of people in a particular region. 

Folkloric dance expresses the life and spirit of a people through its movement and music.

DI motivates young people to look for the challenges in life and see them as opportunities for growth. It inspires students to solve problems, search for creative solutions, and work cooperatively with others. In going through this process, kids learn vital life and career skills—creative thinking, critical thinking, public speaking, and collaborative problem-solving—that help them feel empowered and set them up for success in the future.

FIRST® LEGO® League introduces science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to children ages 4-16* through fun, exciting hands-on learning. Participants gain real-world problem solving experience through a guided, global robotics program, helping today's students and teachers build a better future together.

Here at WHILA we coach two divisions, Explore and Challenge. Here are the specific descriptions for each:

Explore

In Explore, teams of students ages 6-10 focus on the fundamentals of engineering as they explore real-world problems, learn to design, and code, and create unique solutions made with LEGO bricks and powered by LEGO® Education SPIKE Essential.

Challenge

Friendly competition is at the heart of Challenge, as teams of students ages 9-16* engage in research, problem-solving, coding, and engineering - building and programming a LEGO robot that navigates the missions of a robot game.
