Unaccompanied youth are youth who are not in the physical custody of a parent or court-appointed guardian, including young people who have run away from home, young people who have been forced to leave their homes, and young people whose parents have left the area and left the student here. 

Meet with your school counselor and ask your teachers and coaches for advice on college.

Counselors can also help you navigate through any social pressures, offer support during difficult times at home and many other situations. Each campus has at least one full-time counselor.

Schools may not condition school enrollment upon the receipt of proof of legal guardianship by caregivers of homeless,unaccompanied youth; nor may they require caregivers to become legal guardians within a certain period of time after the child enrolls in school. Unaccompanied, homeless youth who are on their own completely must be enrolled in school immediately.

Unaccompanied Youth are eligible for a FAFSA letter to assist in applying for college (Email Us: homelesseducation@dallasisd.org).

For youth who are experiencing homelessness, or who are at risk of homelessness, and who are on their own, applying for the FAFSA can be complex. To learn about comprehensive FAFSA-related resources to help youth, K-12 educators, homeless service providers, and higher education professionals understand, prepare, and fill out the FAFSA.
