Extended School Year

The �鶹��鶹�� on Jan. 28 adopted three calendars for the next two school years, with the majority of schools set to have a traditional calendar (see the traditional calendar).

Schools that had support from families, teachers and campus staff are working to rethink the school year. Research shows the pandemic could seriously impact students academically, and an extended school year calendar helps make sure students get the extra support needed to stay on a path to success. Meanwhile, teachers and campus staff who work at a school with an extended year can make a considerably higher annual compensation that counts toward retirement.

Forty-one schools have confirmed an intersession calendar, which adds five "intersession" weeks to the school year. See the list of schools here. During intersession weeks, up to 50% of students at participating campuses will come to school for targeted enrichment & remediation.

Five schools–Maple Lawn Elementary, H.I. Holland Elementary School at Lisbon, Edna Rowe Elementary School, Thomas J. Rusk Middle School and Boude Storey Middle School– have confirmed a “School Day Redesign” calendar.

Intersession Calendar
Forty-one schools have adopted an “intersession” calendar, which extends the school year to start at the beginning of August and end in late June. Click here to see a list of schools that approved the intersession calendar.

This creates time for five additional intersession weeks spread throughout the year. During the intersession weeks, select students have opportunities for more personalized attention in smaller groups, while teachers will benefit from additional planning time at the start of every intersession week. Not all students will be asked to attend the extra intersession weeks.

The schools adopted the alternative calendar after survey results showed a large majority of families, teachers and staff were in support.

Teachers at a school with an intersession calendar may earn supplemental compensation ranging from $7,000 to $11,000, based on the teachers’ current daily rate of pay. Additional campus positions that are needed for the program may earn up to an additional 11% by working the extra instructional days. The extra compensation will be TRS eligible.

Five �鶹��schools–Maple Lawn Elementary, H.I. Holland Elementary School at Lisbon, Edna Rowe Elementary School, Thomas J. Rusk Middle School and Boude Storey Middle School–have confirmed a “School Day Redesign” calendar for the next two school years.

The school day redesign calendar extends the school year to start at the beginning of August and end in late June for all students, teachers, and staff.

By adopting this calendar, schools can reimagine every school day to include more time for teachers to collaborate and prepare, as well as more time for enrichment and acceleration for students. The school will not change the school day hours; start and end times each day would remain the same.
